Miami may have finally landed their franchise quarterback by drafting Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins selected Tagovailoa with the 5th overall pick of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Tagovailoa, who was born in ‘Ewa Beach, Hawaii, said his family played a huge role in his success.
“It was very emotional for me and my family,” Tagovailoa said. “It hasn’t just been a dream of mine. It’s been my whole family’s dream.”
Talks regarding Tagovailoa’s health led to speculation as to whether Miami would pass on the former National Championship quarterback in favor of Oregon’s Justin Herbert. When it came down to it, Dolphins GM Chris Grier said he loved the decision they made.
“There were a lot of talented players, but we really liked Tua,” Grier said. “We felt very comfortable at the end of the day that he would be a good fit here.”
Tagovailoa suffered a dislocated hip during the 2019 season, a significant injury more associated with car accidents.
The young quarterback said he was happy to be a part of the organization and is grateful for the support from fans, many of which were part of the “Tank for Tua” movement last season.
As for his jersey number dilemma, Tagovailoa said he doesn’t care which number he wears, while also showing respect to Dolphins’ Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino. Tagovailoa wore 13 in college, which has been retired by the Dolphins after Marino’s legendary career.
“I’m not too worried about what number I have,” Tagovailoa said. “I understand number 13 is retired. Dan Marino, he’s the G.O.A.T. Whatever number I’m given… 78, 99. I’ll wear it.”
When coach Flores was asked whether Tua would be competing for a starting role in 2020, he issued a reminder that the world is still facing a pandemic.
“It’s way too early to speculate about this year and how this is going to go,” Flores said.
The Dolphins followed their first selection by selecting USC offensive tackle Austin Jackson with their second first-round pick. Jackson was regarded as one of the top tackles in the draft class.
After trading down with the Green Bay Packers, the Dolphins used their third first-round pick on Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene. He will join a loaded secondary that currently features two of the highest paid defensive backs in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones.
